Fourth quarter dooms Spartans in San Diego

San Jose State women’s basketball played a push-pull game with San Diego State as it edged to clench a higher Mountain West conference seeding, but fell 85-78.

Freshman Cydni Lewis scored a career-high 22 points on 8-12 shooting and collected seven rebounds, but a detrimental fourth quarter did the Spartans in.

SJSU (7-19, 4-11 MW) kept hitting iron in the first quarter, shooting 19 percent from the floor in the opening 10 minutes, allowing SDSU (10-16, 4-11 MW) to take an early 11 point lead.

A 15-1 run in the second half put the Spartans in comeback mode. The two teams rode a tight three-point game in the second and third quarters and the Aztecs led 51-48 after three.

After Myzhanique Ladd scored the first bucket of the fourth to cut it to one, SDSU waved a 19-4 run and never looked back.

Looking ahead, seniors Myzhanique Ladd and Hallie Gennett have a chance to hit 1,000 career points soon. Ladd is 12 points shy and Gennett needs 13.

SJSU has two more games left of the season and will take on Utah State Wednesday at 6 p.m.
