San Jose State baseball failed to get a runner in scoring position in a 10-0 loss against the University of San Francisco.
The Dons’ bats were quiet until the fourth inning after a bases-loaded walk, a bases-loaded hit by pitch and a grand slam by senior infielder Michael Perri to break open the game 6-0. It was the seniors’ sixth home run of his career with USF.
Perri hit a long double in the bottom of the eighth inning to give him 5 RBIs in the game.
The Spartan (2-4) bats went silent in the loss against the Dons (3-2) when sophomore Riley Ornido threw seven no-hit innings and walked one batter in his first collegiate start.
SJSU ended the no-hit bid in the eighth inning with an infield single by sophomore catcher Johnny Mendoza when USF used freshman Alex Pham in relief of Ornido.
The two combined hits in the game is the teams’ lowest lowest since they played Northern Colorado exactly one year ago in a game they were also held scoreless.
Senior Jake Swiech took the mound for his second start of the season and was taken out because of an unknown injury after pitching three shutout innings.
Swiech’s start was better than his first against Northern Colorado when he pitched 2.2 innings and gave up four runs.
Senior Dons infielder Ross Puskarich hit the second home run of the game for USF in the seventh inning.
USF out-hit SJSU 12-2 and took advantage of free bases with six walks and three hit batters. The Spartan bullpen gave up all 10 earned runs and 10 of the 12 hits.
The Spartans’ will try to bounce back from the tough loss tomorrow in their doubleheader. The first game will start at 10:30 a.m. against Sacramento State and their second game starts at 2 p.m. against USF.
