Spartans reach new marks on the road

San Jose State closed out competition at the Bryan Clay Invitational and Mt. SAC Relays with some of its strongest performances coming from the field and relay events, highlighted by standout individual marks and multiple top finishes.

Leading the way was sophomore Myla Easley, who placed second in the women’s long jump and set a personal best with a mark of 5.80 meters (19 feet , 0 ½ inches). 

Close behind in impact, graduate student jumper Audrey McElmurry also delivered a personal-best performance, finishing sixth in the triple jump at 12.57m (41-3).

On the track, the Spartans saw strong relay success, including a fourth-place finish in the men’s 4×400-meter relay at Mt. SAC. 

The group consisted of freshmen Spencer Gray, David Botts, Dontae Smith and sophomores Marcel Bovell and Nathaniel Guillory posted a time of 3:10.58. 

The women’s 4×400 relay team of graduate student Zoe Ewell, freshmen Vivienne Magu, senior Savana Dutton, and Leila Champion added a sixth-place finish in 3:42.94.

Individually, freshman hurdler Julius Baker placed fifth overall in the 110-meter hurdles (14.28), while teammate freshmen Hayden Bowne followed in ninth (14.57). 

On the sprint side, Smith recorded a season-best 47.35 in the 400 meters, and Ewell added a 15th-place finish in the 200 meters (24.28).

“ I think overall this tournament was a positive, … proud of the kids that got to go,” SJSU head coach Charles Ryan said.

Additional contributions came from sophomore jumper Tyson Bonilla, who placed eighth in the men’s long jump (7.20m), and the women’s 4×100 relay squad, which finished eighth in 45.35.

The Spartans hit the road for Fresno State Invitational from May 1-2  at Fresno, California.
