San Jose State women’s tennis battled hard but ultimately fell 4–0 to San Diego State on Sunday morning at the Aztec Tennis Center in San Diego. The loss moved the Spartans to 6–5 overall and 0–2 in Mountain West play.

The match began with doubles play, where SJSU was unable to secure the opening point. On court two, Duru Durgun and Emma Fantousiswere defeated 6–3, while the duo of Soledad Fayos Capilla and  Cristina Mateos Losada dropped their match 6–1 on court one.

With those two results, San Diego State claimed the doubles point and took an early 1–0 lead.

In singles action, the Spartans continued to compete but struggled to turn momentum in their favor. Fayos Capilla fell in straight sets, 6–1, 6–3, while Camila Celis was also defeated in two sets, 6–2, 6–2.

One of the most competitive matches of the day came from Tara Mihaljevic, who pushed her opponent in a closely contested first set that was decided by a tiebreaker. Mihaljevic narrowly lost the set 7–6 (7–4) before dropping the second set 6–3.

Despite the scoreline, Mihaljevic’s performance highlighted the Spartans’ fight against a strong Aztecs squad that entered the match with just one loss on the season.

SJSU will look to bounce back as it returns home for a midweek non-conference matchup.

The Spartans are set to host Rhode Island on at noon on Wednesday, March 18 at the Spartan Tennis Complex, where they will aim to regroup and return to the win column.
