Spartans improve to 4-0 with win over Saint Mary’s

The San Jose State women’s tennis team improved to (4-0, 0-0 MW) on the season with a 4-2 road victory over Saint Mary’s (1-4, 0-0 WCC) on Friday afternoon at the Timothy Korth Tennis Complex in Moraga, Calif.

After dropping the doubles point early, the Spartans responded with a resilient showing in singles play in a match that stretched more than three hours.

“Three and a half hour match, it was a dog fight out there.” SJSU head coach Chad Skorupka said.

Freshman Camila Celis clinched the win for SJSU in a tough three-set match. After losing the first set, she came back to win 2-6, 6-2, 7-5. Celis is now 4-0 in dual singles matches this season.

Junior Duru Durgun earned a straight-set win on court one, 6-4, 6-2.

Freshman Tara Mihaljevic also won in straight sets on court four, 6-3, 7-5.  She remains undefeated as well at 4-0 in dual singles play.

Sophomore Cristina Mateos Losada added another point for the Spartans with a win via walkover on court six.

In doubles, the Spartans were unable to win a match. Mihaljevic and Celis fell 6-4, while Durgun and sophomore Emma Fantousis lost 6-1. 

Fantousis was also defeated in her singles match, 6-2, 6-1.

Even after losing the doubles point, the Spartans stayed focused and won the match with strong singles performances.

Up next, the Spartans travel south to face CSUN in Northridge, Calif., with first serve set for 11 a.m.
