As the Major League Soccer 2026 SuperDraft came to a close Thursday afternoon, the Houston Dynamo selected SJSU junior midfielder Gilberto Rivera with the 88th overall pick
Rivera is the eighth Spartan to be drafted in the MLS SuperDraft, and the second in over two decades alongside Beau Leroux, who was drafted by the San Jose Earthquakes in 2023. Both athletes were drafted as third-years.
“All my family was here so as soon as everyone saw my name we all just got up and started celebrating,” Rivera said.
Former SJSU men’s soccer head coach, Simon Tobin, praised Rivera’s growth throughout his time with the Spartans, calling his opportunity well earned and expressing confidence that he can succeed at the highest level.
The Hayward native was a key cog in SJSU men’s soccer campaign in 2025, starting all of his 19 games, scoring two goals and providing eight assists which joint-lead the Western Athletic Conference.
Rivera’s season earned him many honors, including WAC Defensive Player of the Week, First Team All-Far West Region, WAC All-Tournament Team and First Team All-WAC.
As a sophomore in 2024 he also was awarded WAC All-Tournament Team, CSC Academic All-District and Academic All-WAC.
Rivera had sat down with the Dynamo at the MLS College Showcase and perked his ears to their playing style and his possible fit in their team for the future.
“They like pressing, they like keeping the ball and all that just fits how I play too. So I’m excited to go,” Rivera said.
Rivera may have the option to continue his senior year with the Spartans or leave for Houston, but whatever happens for the Spartan number six, he is thankful for his journey.
“San Jose State is the one that took a chance on me…I have to give it all to Simon and SJSU and thank them for everything,” Rivera said.
