San Jose State women’s volleyball (13-16, 8-10 MW) would fall short in its last road game of the season against UNLV (13-15, 7-11 MW) in a 3-0 sweep.
Despite the loss, history was made as junior middle blocker Ava Hewitt-Smith finished the season with 36 solo blocks.
Those 36 blocks by Hewitt-Smith tied Felicia Schulter (1983) for the fifth-most in a season in school history.
The first set saw a lot of back and forth between both teams. Redshirt junior right-side hitter Lolo Fonua led the Spartans with seven kills this set.
It wouldn’t be enough to take the set, losing the set 26-24 in a close one.
UNLV would put its foot on the gas and not look back.
Winning set two 25-19, and then closing out the match with a 25-15 set three win.
Other Spartans that had some great performances were junior setter Fatima Hall, who had 22 assists and 17 digs.
Sophomore middle blocker Learden Lee was the only Spartan to have more than one block, tallying four total blocks.
SJSU head coach Todd Kress talks about the frustration throughout the match.
“At times it didn’t look like we wanted to be on the court,” Kress said. “Which was really frustrating, considering it’s a match to go to the conference tournament.”
Kress recaps the season overall for the Spartans and how the team played.
“Great season overall, I’m going to remember this last match where I’m worried about the desire and passion of the play,” Kress said.
SJSU finished the season on a sour note, but have a lot of positives to take from this season moving forward and to implement into next season.
