San Jose State’s women’s basketball (0-3, 0-0 MW) dropped its third straight game to start the season after losing to UC Santa Barbara (4-1, 0-0 BWC) 75-60 on Wednesday.
After leading 33-32 at halftime, the wheels fell off for the Spartans, as they were outscored 21-9 in the third quarter alone.
Gauchos junior forward Zoe Borter led the third quarter rally with eight points along with junior guard Madison Naro’s seven points.
The Spartans struggled to put the ball in the basket during the third quarter, shooting an abysmal 2-13 from the field and 0-8 from the three-point line.
The Gauchos took advantage of the bad shooting of SJSU with 7-16 shooting of their own and 3-8 from three.
Redshirt sophomore forward Maya Anderson led the way for the Spartans with 12 points on 5-8 shooting. Redshirt senior guard Amira Brown contributed with 11 points of her own.
Turnovers killed the Spartans in this game, turning the ball over 25 times to the Gauchos’ 12. UC Santa Barbara would turn those 25 turnovers into 27 points.
“We came out in the third quarter and just didn’t have it for whatever reason,” SJSU head coach Jonas Chatterton said. “We turned the ball over a few times and gave them some easy baskets off that.”
SJSU will go on the road searching for its first win of the season against Pepperdine University at 1 p.m. on Nov. 23 at the Firestone Fieldhouse.
