The San Jose State women’s tennis team concluded the Fall Invitational with an impressive showing over three days at the Spartan Tennis Complex.
The Spartans closed the event with a strong singles performance against Santa Clara and competitive doubles play versus UC Davis.
Sophomore Emma Fantousis delivered the standout win of the weekend, coming back from down a set to defeat Tian Yu Dong, 6-2, 3-6, 6-0.
Her victory secured a majority singles win for SJSU to finish the weekend.
Fantousis, alongside her teammate junior Duru Durgun finished with an unbeaten 3-0 in singles to wrap up the weekend.
“Job well done for Emma sophomore and Durgun junior, they went 3-0 in singles, good showing leading the team,” SJSU head coach Chad Skorupka said.
Durgun added a dominant straight-sets win over sophomore Anna Rahman, 6-4, 6-1.
Sophomore Soledad Fayos Capilla continued her run of good form with a 6-4, 6-1 victory against sophomore Juliette Krumholz.
Sophomore Cristina Mateos Losada also earned a good win, beating sophomore Madhu Satishbabu 6-4, 6-3.
Tara Mihaljevic fell to Ashley Katz, 3-6, 2-6, while Katarina Brajovic fell short to Jamie Pope, 6-2, 6-4.
In doubles, the Spartans were unable to claim a win, falling in all three matches against UC Davis.
“A lot of work to do with doubles moving forward,” Skorupka said.
Saturday’s competition featured singles play against Nevada and doubles against Santa Clara.
Freshman Tara Mihaljevic earned her first home singles victory, defeating sophomore Petra Janigova, 6-1, 6-4.
Fantousis stayed dominant, winning in straight sets over senior Silvia-Maria Costache, 6-4, 6-1.
Fantousis and Durgun teamed up for a thrilling, 7-6, (7-5), doubles win against Tian Yu Dong and Ashley Katz.
Durgun fell narrowly to senior Amahee Charrier, 7-5, 6-4, while Fayos Capilla battled hard but lost in three sets.
Brajovic, Mateos Losada, and Fayos Capilla each dropped doubles matches in competitive efforts.
The tournament opened Friday with early momentum for the Spartans.
Brajovic and Fantousis earned a 6-4 doubles win over Nevada.
Durgun started strong with a 6-2, 6-3 singles victory over senior Maya Youssef.
Fayos Capilla came from behind to win 3-6, 6-3, 7-5, while Brajovic and Fantousis also claimed singles victories.
Mateos Losada had a tiebreak win over sophomore Penelope Wong, 6-3, 7-6 (9-7).
The Spartans displayed energy, depth, and determination throughout the weekend.
The Spartans now turn their focus to the CSUN Fall Invite, which will go on from Friday, Nov. 7 to Sunday, Nov. 9 at Northridge, CA.
