Spartans wrap up at Cal Fall Invitational

SJSU women’s tennis wrapped up their three days at the Cal Fall Invitational on Sunday at Berkeley, Calif.

On the opening day, the Spartans had their most successful day of the tournament.

SJSU sophomore Cristina Mateos Losada  defeated Santa Clara’s Jamie Pope 6-3, 6-0, and came back to beat Stanford’s No. 4 seed Morgan Shaffer 4-6, 7-6 (7-4), 4-1. She and doubles partner sophomore Katarina Brajovic fell to Cal’s Tiziana-Marie Schomburg and Anya Murthy 8-1. Brajovic also lost to Saint Mary’s Sophie Stanton 6-1, 6-3.

The Spartans struggled on day two, with Losada falling in the semifinals on Saturday to Saint Mary’s Elif Tuana Gunal 2-6, 6-4, 7-6 (7-1). She and Brajovic also dropped their doubles match to Stanton and Iman Khan 8-3. Brajovic lost her singles match to Pacific’s Cindy Ung 6-3, 6-1.

Brajovic picked up a singles win on Sunday, defeating Pacific’s Leyanne Hirota 6-3, 6-1. She and Mateos Losada fell 8-3 in doubles later in the day to wrap up their tournament at Berkeley.

“We’ll take a couple days off and prepare for the SJSU Fall Invite in late October,” said Head Coach Chad Skorupka

The Spartans have their eyes set on the SJSU Fall Invite taking place here in San Jose, scheduled from Oct. 24-26.
