San Jose State women’s tennis (15-3, 6-2 MW) suffered its second straight loss in a 4-1 defeat against UNLV (15-5, 6-2 MW) on Friday morning.

The Spartans lost both of their doubles competition.

SJSU senior Olaya Bances Iglesias and sophomore Duru Durgun lost their doubles competition against UNLV senior Cindy Hu and senior Coco Zhao, 6-1.

SJSU freshman Emma Fantousis and freshman Soledad Fayos Capilla fell short against UNLV freshman Sofiia Sokolvak and freshman Kaho Oyama, 6-2.

“If we get off to a slow start in doubles, it means we’re going to get off to a slow start in singles,” SJSU head coach Chad Skorupka said in a video posted to SJSU athletics website.

That was the case as the Spartans would drop three singles matches.

Durgun lost her singles match against UNLV freshman Veronika Kliuch, 6-1, 6-4.

Bances Iglesias dropped her match against UNLV sophomore Nikol Mircheva, 6-3, 6-1.

Fantousis put up a close fight against Oyama, 6-3, 7-6 (7-5).

“Right now, we’re not in a place where we want to be,” Skorupka said. “We’re not playing confident ball.”

Fayos Capilla grabbed the Spartans’ only point in a singles win against UNLV senior Hanna VInahradava, 6-4, 7-5.

“We need to recharge, get up to Reno and get a good practice tomorrow,” Skorupka said.

SJSU will look to get back to its winning ways against Nevada at noon Sunday at McArthur Tennis Center.
