San Jose State baseball (17-10) outlasted Mountain West rival, Fresno State (11-15) after a 2-1 defensive showdown on March 29.
Both teams had strong pitching performances. The Bulldogs’ starting pitcher, Aidan Cremarosa, pitched seven innings, earning seven strikeouts and allowing three hits.
Kyle Calzadiaz anchored the Spartans, pitching six innings, earning six strikeouts, and allowing two hits. Both pitchers exited the game scoreless.
The lone Bulldog run came in the top of the eighth inning when senior infielder Eddie Saldivar singled off a bunt and then junior infielder Murf Gray hit an RBI to left field.
The Spartans responded in the bottom of the inning, scoring both runs. This happened after senior infielder Drew Giannini singled to right field. Senior Jeriah Lewis replaced Giannini as a pinch runner; Lewis is the team’s stolen base leader.
Next, senior outfielder Alex Fernandes hit an RBI to left field. The next at bat senior infielder Antonio Nanez hit an RBI down the right field line.
SJSU head coach Brad Sanfilippo said, “ I think this is one of our better wins of the year.”
Spartans sophomore pitcher Tyler Albanese closed the game, putting out three Bulldogs in a row.
