San Jose State baseball (18-15, 6-6 MW) was overrun by Cal Poly (23-8, 12-0 Big West), suffering an 8-5 loss.

Earlier in the season, the Spartans faced an 18-4 defeat against the Mustangs.

SJSU third baseman JC Osorio-Agard stayed hot, hitting his third home run in two games in the third inning. He went 2-for-4, tying him for the team lead with five homers this season.

The Spartans totaled nine hits and drew seven walks, leaving 12 runners stranded in this lone midweek contest.

Cal Poly scored in four of the first five innings, establishing a 6-2 lead heading into the sixth. At that point, the Spartans made their most significant threat, pushing three runs on RBI groundouts from SJSU shortstop Rocco Caballero, designated hitter Drew Giannini, and an RBI single from Center fielder Jeriah Lewis

However, the Mustangs responded in the bottom half with two runs, effectively sealing the game.

“We’ve got to play a little bit better defense to keep a really dangerous team down. We’ve had chances to score, and we’ve got to capitalize on those,” Head Coach Brad Sanfilippo said.

Starting pitcher Cade Cushing was charged with the loss after allowing four runs—three earned—over four innings.

The Spartan bullpen delivered mixed results, with Luca Staiano standing out by contributing a scoreless inning. Ishaan Khambal and Wade Mountz also pitched.

SJSU right fielder Alex Fernandes added to the offensive effort, finishing 2-for-4 with an RBI. Giannini reached base three times, while first baseman Zach Tallerman and catcher Jake Vanoncini each recorded a hit and a run scored.

The Spartans will look to bounce back against Nevada in the first game of a three-game series on Friday at 6:05 p.m. in Reno, Nev.
