San Jose State women’s basketball (10-17, 3-11 MW) could not catch up with New Mexico (15-12, 8-6 MW) as it lost 65-72.

The Spartans were sloppy this game with 15 turnovers. They were in a constant game of catchup throughout the entire match.

Another reason why the Spartans lost this game is due to a bad defensive performance in the paint. They gave up 42 points in the paint.

The Spartans never really had true control of the game as the total time they had the lead was around two minutes.

“I think a lot of the games that we don’t give ourselves a chance is when we start off really bad,”  redshirt junior center Finau Tonga said. “I think our goal and my goal is really just coming in and being aggressive and being a threat.”

Tonga led the team in scoring with 14 points along with seven rebounds, two blocks and a steal.

Senior guard Amiah Simmons and sophomore guard Sydni Summers tied for second with 13 points.

Summers acknowledged that she didn’t have the greatest performance as she was 3-17 from the field and had 5 turnovers.

“I feel like I could have made smarter decisions,” Summers said. “It’s a learning lesson so I just got to fix it.”

The Spartans next matchup is against San Diego State (19-9, 8-7 MW) on Saturday at home. They hope to be able to bounce back and take a win at home before hitting the road.

“At this point in the season, you just have to continue the grind,” head coach April Phillips said. “So we’ll be back in the gym and we’re preparing for San Diego State.”
