SJSU baseball dropped its season opener in a 7-2 road loss against Louisiana, a rematch when both teams faced each other in the College World Series in 2000.
Despite having twice as many hits, errors were costly for the Spartans, allowing four runs on zero hits and two errors in the bottom of the third inning.
All seven runs for the Ragin Cajuns resulted from walks, hit by pitch, or errors.
“We didn’t take care of the baseball too well tonight,” head coach Brad Sanfilippo said. “We gave a good team too much away and they took advantage of that.”
Offensively, the Spartans were able to rack up on a couple of hits, but weren’t able to spark much. Chances were created, but they would leave six players on base.
The top half of their batting order would contribute to six of their eight hits.
Senior outfielder Jeriah Lewis opened the season strong as the lead-off hitter, with two hits and one RBI.
San Jose State will look to clean up its errors made today in their second match of a three game series against Louisiana Saturday in Lafayette, La.
