Five goals scored in the third period propelled the San Jose Sharks to a convincing 7-2 win over the Los Angeles Kings (11-8-3) Monday night at SAP Center.
The Sharks (7-12-5) were led by rookie sensation Macklin Celebrini who had two goals on four shots, two hits and two blocked shots.
“We came out with a lot of jump in the third, we controlled possession and we took it to them instead of just sitting back and letting them do their thing,” Celebrini said. “We forced them to make mistakes and we got on top of them.”
Celebrini started the third with a tie-breaking snapshot that put the Sharks up 3-2 1:03 minutes into the third.
No. 1 overall pick Celebrini scored his second of the night later in the period along with Timothy Liljegren, Alex Wennberg and Luke Kunin notching goals in the third.
Nico Sturm scored in the first period with a wrist shot for the Sharks in his return from the IR with an upper body injury.
Fabian Zetterlund scored in the second period for San Jose on a wrist shot.
“Before the game, (Zetterland) told the boys to shoot the puck,” Celebrini said.
The 18-year-old now has six goals and 10 points through 12 games.
Goaltender Yaroslav Askarov found out he would make his home debut Sunday before practice and he went on to notch his first career win, with only two goals allowed and .917 save percentage.
“We’ll be good,” Askarov said of the future of the Sharks.
This last time the Sharks scored seven was April 1, 2023 in a 7-2 win at Arizona.
“There’s been a lot of moments in my time here where it hasn’t quite been so fun, me standing here, but today, after a pretty solid win by us, it feels good,” Mario Ferraro said. “We just got to find a way to do it more consistently.”
The San Jose Sharks take on the Ottawa Senators (9-11-1) at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at SAP Center.
