San Jose State beach volleyball split a two-duel series at the University of San Francisco on March 9.

The last time the Spartans played was the Battle of the Bay where they competed against tough competition and finished 1-3.

SJSU dominated the first duel on the day, winning 4-1. Not a single matchup needed to go three sets.

The pairing of juniors Shirley Morrison and Jaena Bell led the way for the Spartans winning both their matches on Saturday. An impressive start for the pair in their first time playing together this season.

Sophomore Teila Allen and senior Cheyenne Rice picked up right where they left off after performing well in their last outing. They won their day one match up against Dons’ freshman Jette Morris and McKenna Towne in just two sets.

In the second duel of the day, Rice and Allen lost their game in three close sets. They have been one of the best pairs for the Spartans this season but fell short on Saturday.

It has been a shaky start to the season for SJSU. The Spartans are currently 2-5 and are tied for second-to-last in the Mountain West standings.

Next up on the schedule for SJSU is a double-header against the University of the Pacific on March 13.
