San Jose State women’s basketball (6-18, 1-11 MW) lost its 10th straight game as it fell to New Mexico (17-8, 8-4 MW) 72-51 on the road.
The Spartans struggled in this matchup as junior forward Amhyia Moreland and sophomore guard Sabrina Ma would be the only players on the team to score in double figures. The Lobos were led by junior guard Viane Cumber who scored 17 points on the night.
Moreland had another big game leading all scorers in the game with 19 to go along with two blocks. She continues to be a large presence for the Spartans in the paint and has shown how her mid-range jumper to be a threat. Ma had a solid performance scoring 12 points to go along with one steal.
San Jose State has one of the youngest teams in the conference and with that comes inconsistent play. Freshmen Sydni Summers and Maya Anderson totaled just 11 points on the night.
“We have to do a better job coming out of halftime and being able to respond to the punches and we didn’t respond tonight,” SJSU head coach April Phillips said. “We just have to continue getting better, I think Fresno State is a good match for us… and be ready to compete to the end of the buzzer.”
SJSU is at its best when knocking down threes but struggled shooting just 6-22 from the 3-point line Wednesday.
The Spartans will also need help off the bench as they only accumulated nine bench points. Look for players like Marisa Davis-Jones to step up as a leader for the Spartans.
The Spartans continue on the road as they’re scheduled to take on their rivals, the Fresno State Bulldogs, on Saturday at 2 p.m. at the Save Mart Center.
