SJSU men’s soccer will play against GCU in its final home stretch of the year on Sunday.

The Spartans ( 5-5-4, 2-2-1) play the sixth place Antelopes ( 6-4-2, 1-1-1) after a stunning 2-0 loss to Cal Baptist.

The loss moved the Spartans from second place to fourth, making this upcoming game the most important.

Grand Canyon will have fresh legs since it didn’t play a Thursday game this week, having over a seven day break.

“We have to turn around and play Sunday against Grand Canyon when they don’t have a Thursday game,” said head coach Simon Tobin “to be honest I’m a bit concerned about the make up of the conference schedule.”

GCU is coming off a 4-1 win over UTRGV last week and doesn’t show any signs of slowing down.

Grand Canyon sophomore Bright Nutornutsi leads the conference in goals with eight on the year, scoring his last time out.

While on the other side for SJSU, midfielder Angel Iniguez Isn’t too far behind in conference goals with five. He also leads in assists with six.

On the defensive side, it’ll be a battle of the best net minders in the conference.

Antelope goalie Leon Schmidt leads the conference in saves with 58. SJSU’s David Sweeney is at second with 46.

SJSU men’s soccer will hope to get things going early after finishing with one shot attempt in the first half on Thursday’s loss.

This final home game will also be senior night for notable players like Sweeney and captain Kasper Poulsgaard who is out for the season.

“All of them have been great servants to the program,” said Tobin. “We want to send them off in a great way and they’ll be happy to be sent off with a win.”

The match will kick off on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. at the Spartan Soccer Complex.
