SJSU men’s soccer ties against the University of the Pacific

San Jose State men’s soccer (1-2-3, 0-0 WAC) tied on the road against the University of the Pacific (3-2-2, 0-0 WCC) on Wednesday night. 

Multiple shots were attempted by the Spartans in the first half. San Jose State’s sophomore forward Riccardo Scarafia attempted the first shot seven minutes into the game. The shot was followed up with a corner kick 30 seconds later from junior midfielder Emiliano Corona. The kick was blocked by UOP’s redshirt sophomore goalkeeper Brian Lanier.

At the 39th mark, UOP took the lead with fifth-year forward Derick Roque scoring the first goal of the game with assistance from graduate midfielder Samuel Villalta and fifth-year midfielder Avery Whipple.

Throughout the second half, the Spartans continued to press forward in search of an equalizer. 

Their efforts paid off in the 71st minute when Scarafia, assisted by sophomore forward Anthony Guzman, scored a low left goal bringing the game to a tie. This was Scarafia’s first goal of the season.

After 90 minutes of action, the game ended in a tie with the final score being 1-1. 

Senior goalkeeper David Sweeney moved into a tie for second place on the San Jose State Spartans all-time save’s list after a five-stop performance. Sweeney is 11 saves away from tying Keith Bateman, the all-time leader with 253 saves.

SJSU’s next match will be a home game this Sunday against Santa Clara University at 7:00 p.m.
