SJSU Volleyball finishes 2-1 in tournament

San Jose State (6-2) finishes the Fairfield Inn & Suites Dunn Campbell Invitational with a 2-1 record and two Spartans finished with over 35 kills in the tournament. 

Freshman Nayeli Ti’a and junior Blaire Fleming dominated the court offensively over the weekend. Ti’a finished tournament play with 39 and Fleming with 40. 

Winning two matches 3-1 and losing one 3-0, the Spartans have yet to have a clean record in tournament play. 

Match 1

To start the tournament the Spartans first faced the Camels of Campbell University. 

SJSU dropped the first set to Campbell but returned to win three straight sets to win 3-1. 

Winning the sets by the scores of 25-22, 26-24 and 25-16.

Leading the way for the Spartans were Ti’a and Fleming with 16 kills each.

Ti’a also finished the match by collecting her second double-double of the season with 16 kills and 18 digs. 

Match 2 

SJSU faced Georgia Southern for its second match on Friday.

The Eagles overpowered the Spartans by sweeping them 3-0. Losing by the scores of 25-19, 25-22, 25-17. 

The loss still did not stop Ti’a from once again leading her team in kills. Despite getting swept she still collected 14 kills.

Match 3

For the final match of the Campbell Invitational the Spartans next faced the Roadrunners from the University of Texas at San Antonio. 

SJSU only lost one set in their final match to beat UTSA 3-1. 

To finish the fourth and final set of the match the women in blue and gold went on a 5-0 scoring run to win 25-19. 

Fleming took the reigns of the match for the Spartans as she finished the match with 19 kills now tallying her 40 kills over the weekend. 

SJSU will continue to be on the road for their next matchup traveling to Moraga, Calif. to face Saint Mary’s on Tuesday at 6:00 p.m.
