SJSU beach volleyball defeats Bakersfield in tournament

The SJSU beach volleyball team (7-4) defeated the CSU Bakersfield beach volleyball (6-3) team Friday during the San Jose State tournament 3-2.

Shortly after the Spartans defeated the USF, SJSU defeated the Roadrunners to an identical score of 3-2 to both matches on St. Patrick’s day.

This was a must win to change the momentum as San Jose had lost the previous four matches in in the Southland Midseason Tournament.

The match started with SJSU Jaida Ward and Cheyenne Rice whom defeated Sophia Brandsetter and Hana Makonova. Rice won in both duo duels against USF and and CSU Bakersfield putting up over 19 in each matchup.

The third matchup was the next victory for San Jose as Nayelli Tia and Tessa Rogers defeated Isabella Almeida and Hayley Mclusky. The final duo draw was Isabelle Sistek and Meredith Scott who defeated Pearl Morgan and Megan Gilbert to end the tournament.

The Spartans lost the second duo draw to Sophia Hladyniuk and Emma Erteltova 19-21, 25-23, 19-17 and the fourth duo draw of the match to Alanna Shields and duo partner Emma Bubelis 21-14 and 21-18.

Coach Gary Hodge gave props to Bakersfield and the Spartans that went up against them today.

“Bakersfield is always good, there coach is great,” said Hodge. ” Every single pair that stepped on the sand for us learned and got better.”

The SJSU beach volleyball team will begin Saturday’s matchup against Oregon (4-12) which will be played at the Spartan Beach at 9 a.m. and another match against Boise State (11-4) at 3 p.m. to conclude day two of the San Jose State tournament.
