SJSU women’s golf tied fourth at the Mountain View Collegiate Sunday in a tournament where Iowa State broke multiple records to dazzle in first.

SJSU has always had success at the Tucson, AZ located contest, finishing second a year ago and are tied with the most individual titles in the tournament’s history.

But their good could not stop another’s great.

Despite three top-12 finishes of their own, the Spartans would not have enough to surmount the Iowa State lead.

The Cyclones set the lowest 54-hole team finish in NCAA history with an astonishing 60-under-par.

The masterful play of Iowa State’s freshman Karisa Chul-Ak-Sorn took the tournament by storm. Chul-Ak-Sorn finished 25-under-par, tying the lowest individual 54-hole performance in NCAA history.

Kajsa Arwefjall, who played in Chul-Ak-Sorn’s group, led the Spartans again with a top-10 finish and shot eight-under-par.

“Iowa State had an amazing round and now we know that’s possible,”  said Head Coach Dana Dormann, referencing their 23-under-par performance Saturday.

Antonia Malate had the best single-day score of the tournament for the Spartans on Sunday shooting five-under-par and finished tied for 12th. Lucia Lopez Ortega also finished in 12th with a score of 211.

After finishing the Cactus Cup Tuesday, the quick turnaround did not appear to affect the Spartans play, finishing with the second most birdies.

All the statistics point to SJSU women’s golf having a good tournament. They shot only five strokes over last year’s total of 840 which netted them second place.

But the historic play of Iowa State left them trailing.

This is the only time the Spartans will have to play multiple tournaments in a week. They’ll have a couple weeks off before they head down south to Silverado, CA where they’ll play in the Chevron Silverado Showdown next.
