While freshman standout Rebecca Gyllner remains undefeated at match play in her collegiate career, the Spartans had no team wins in their two day tournament at the Cactus Cup.

Hosted by Arizona State at the Papago golf course, the match play event featured four of the top 11 teams in collegiate golf testing SJSU’s firepower. The No. 6 Spartans lost to No. 4 South Carolina and eventual winner No. 8 Texas and tied with No. 11 ASU.

This tournament could not be more different from the one the Spartans had come from weather wise. They went from getting pelted with hail at the Juli Inkster Invitational to the humid and warm Arizona climate.

The weather seemed to help Gyllner who took care of business quickly playing in 46 of a possible 54 holes and winning on average by over a three stroke gap.

Grad student Antonia Malate had two of the Spartans seven wins also averaging below par for the tournament.

Reigning Mountain West golfer of the week Kajsa Arwefjall took one win on Monday but lost in 17 holes in her following matches.

Despite not winning any matches, Louisa Carlbom averaged a 72.6, her best score this spring, and tied in her match against South Carolina.

Of the 24 golfers that competed, 14 of them are ranked in the top 100 via Golfstat.

With only two tournaments now before the Mountain West Championships, SJSU has now prepared themselves by playing 4 of the top 11 programs in less than a month head-to-head.

Though they’ll stay in Arizona, they face a quick turnaround starting Friday where they’ll take part in the Mountain View Invitational.
