The SJSU baseball team (6-5, 3-0 MW) hosts St. Mary’s College (4-9, 0-0 WCC) Wednesday afternoon at Excite Ballpark.

Even though there have been six games this season that have been canceled or postponed because of weather, the season is still early and the Spartans rank number one at the top of the Mountain West standings.

The Spartans currently hold a two game winning streak and plan to extend the streak against the Gaels Wednesday. The game will be the first of two matchups between the Spartans and Gaels this season.

SJSU’s pitching has been off to a great start this season with three Spartans ranking in the top 10 in the Mountain West Conference in ERA. Leading the pitching rotation is redshirt senior Jack White. White is 3-1 with an ERA of 0.79.

Redshirt junior first baseman Hunter Dorraugh has been on a tear so far this season. In 11 games played so far Dorraugh has a homerun, 10 RBIs and leads the team with a .311 batting average on 14 hits. Dorraugh has already won Mountain West player of the week in the month of February.

Also for SJSU, redshirt junior outfielder Robert Hamchuk just won Mountain West player of the week during the second week of March. In a three game spanned Hamchuk went 8-for-16 with three doubles and five RBIs and added a homerun.

St. Mary’s has a lineup full of power hitters. In the 13 games played so far, the Gaels have a total of 15 home runs.

Graduate student third baseman Bill Ralston leads the gaels in batting with a .340 avg on 16 hits. Ralston is also tied in first on the team with three home runs with 10 RBIs.

Catch SJSU take on St. Mary’s Wednesday afternoon at 2:05 p.m. in Excite Ballpark. We’re all hoping for clear skies because Wednesday afternoon is a perfect day for baseball.
