The SJSU track and field team has harnessed the power of the Land Of Enchantment.

From Feb. 23-25, the Spartans returned to New Mexico to compete in the Don Kirby Invitational after racking up multiple great finishes at the UNM Indoor Open

On day one of the competition, SJSU wasted no time picking up where it left off, shattering multiple school records in the process.

Sophomore high jumper Lina Schubert, who finished 6th in the women’s high jump, set a new school record with a 1.77m jump.

On the men’s side, freshman sprinter Christopher Coats once again stole the show in the 200m dash with a time of 21.01 to set a new record. However, fellow freshman teammate Cameron Tarver followed up with a time of 20.98.

The freshman continued to shine as freshman jumper Amaju Reed set a new record in the men’s long jump with a 7.70m jump. Reed’s jump replaces the previous record which has been held by Marlon Anderson since 1969.

On day two of the competition, The Spartans continued to roll.

Freshman Sprinter Demarias Waters achieved a new personal best and second-best all-time in the men’s 60m high hurdles with a time of 7.80. Sophomore jumper Osayi Omorodion placed third in the women’s 60m high hurdles with a time of 8.57.

The 4×400 relay saw new records set on both the women’s and men’s sides. The women placed fifth and finished with a time of 3:43.37 while the men placed fourth with a time of 3.08.30.

Head coach Charles Ryan expressed some of his excitement from his team’s performance after the invitational.

The spotlight now shifts to the Mountain West Indoor Championships where the Spartans will look to add another high-level performance in Albuquerque. The first day of action is set for Feb. 23.
