SJSU women’s water polo (2-3) continued the Cal Cup tournament falling to the California Golden Bears (4-0), 15-4 at Berkeley.
SJSU did not beat Cal last season and the beginning of this season started off in the same direction.
While at halftime, the Spartans trailed 8-0 and didn’t score until the second half with two goals in each quarters.
Graduate goalkeeper Hannah Henry would finish the match with three saves and a devastating save percentage of 20%.
Junior Goalkeeper Elaina Davey finished the match with 4 saves and a save percentage of 57%.
The first goal scorer for the Spartans was freshman Sinia Plotz. followed by fifth year Kylee Jansen.
Junior Belene Rodriguez opened up the scoring for SJSU in the final quarter and senior Lior Ben David netted in the final goal of the match.
SJSU women’s water polo assists leader was awarded to from sophomore Renee Flaming with two assists.
The other Spartan players that got on the scoreboard with assists were graduate Olga Descalzi and graduate Clarissa Wandinger, with one assist each.
Despite the two losses at the Cal Cup, head coach Beth Harbert was optimistic about the team’s future and had a positive outlook on the team’s quality of play throughout the day.
“It’s fun to take on the top teams of the nation,” said head coach Harberts. “Had a lot of tremendous experience with getting a lot of advantages on our on our offensive attack. The fact we had a lot of good production out of that is great, next step is finishing that shot so we’re on our way.”
The SJSU women’s team will face UC Davis tomorrow at 9:45 am in Berkeley for the third game of the Cal Cup tournament with the final game against Fresno State at 2 pm.
