San Jose State women’s basketball (3-15, 1-8 MW) prevailed 77-59 over Utah State (4-15, 1-7 MW) inside the Provident Credit Union Event Center on Saturday Afternoon. This marks head coach April Phillips’ first Mountain West conference win.
The Spartans led 24-14 after forcing the Aggies into committing eight turnovers in the first quarter.
Freshman guard Sabrina Ma scored six points off 2-4 shooting in the opening period.
SJSU led 38-25 over Utah State at the end of the second quarter.
The Spartans’ staunch defense generated 18 points off the Aggies’ 15 turnovers in the first half.
Ma led all scorers with eight points off 3-6 shooting at the intermission.
Sophomore forward Marisa Davis-Jones also provided five points and a team-high four rebounds in the first half.
The Spartans made eight of their first 10 shots to start the third quarter and extended their lead to 58-33.
Ma led SJSU to a 64-36 lead with eight points and a perfect 3-3 shooting in the third quarter.
The Aggies bounced back with a 19-2 run to start the fourth quarter and cut the Spartans’ lead to 66-55 with 3:14 left in the game.
SJSU closed out with a 77-59 win despite committing 10 turnovers in the final period.
Three SJSU women’s basketball players finished the game with double-digits in scoring.
Ma set a new career-high with five 3-pointers and provided a game-high 21 points. This was the second game in a row she scored 20 points or more.
Davis-Jones also recorded 13 points and six rebounds.
Additonally, senior guard Jada Holland dropped 12 points, seven rebounds, seven assists, and six steals.
“We were able to pick up 30 points off turnovers. . . I am just proud how hard they fought and even late when there was a run, how we kind of bounced back and get it back together to close out the game,” said head coach April Phillips.
SJSU women’s basketball looks to build off this win when it hosts Nevada next Thursday inside the Provident Credit Union Event Center.
