Jay Butterfield is back in the Bay after committing to SJSU

Jay Butterfield, a former four-star recruit and No. 5 pro-style quarterback in the country, has committed to SJSU marking the Spartans’ biggest splash of the transfer portal era.

The Brentwood, Ca. native, who led Liberty-Brentwood to a CIF 1-A State Bowl in 2018 comes with three years of eligibility.

It’s likely that he will serve as back up quarterback for Chevan Corderio in 2023 who’s fresh off an All Mountain West second team selection and has one year of eligibility remaining.

However, there is a solid chance he’ll start in the 2024 season.

He’ll join a quarterback’s room that also includes freshman Tyler Voss and sophomore Walker Eget

Coming out of high school, Butterfield had offers from Tennessee, Michigan, Iowa State and Washington State.

In his three years as a Duck, Butterfield registered just two games played and four passes attempted, however, he did show promise in the 2022 spring game, completing 16 of 26 passes for a touchdown and an interception.

If you’re a Bay Area resident the name “Butterfield” might ring bells for you.

Jay led the Liberty-Brentwood Lions to a CIF 1-A State Bowl in 2018 and was the top rated player in the Bay Area in 2020 while his father Mark had a exceptional career at Antioch High before committing to Stanford and leading the Cardinals to a 7-4 record his senior season.
