San Jose State women’s volleyball lost to Weber State, 3-1, in a match where the momentum continued to shift back and forth.
The Spartans came out with a head of steam and won the first set, 25-19, after recording seven blocks in the set alone. SJSU held Weber State to -.097% hitting in the first set and it was off to a great start.
The lead was short-lived as SJSU would lose the second set, 25-18, due to five service errors. With the match tied, 1-1, the intensity began to pick up.
The third set was highly contested between the two teams and there was no telling who would win. SJSU started set three strong and found itself with a 16-13 lead due to some stellar defense.
SJSU tried to fend off an aggressive Weber State team, but the game was eventually tied at 24, after a detrimental attack error from SJSU’s outside hitter, Amethyst Harper. The Spartans went down 25-24 on a kill from Weber State, but they quickly tied it up once again. SJSU went on to lose the next two points, losing the set, 27-25.
The Spartans went down early, 6-2, in the fourth set. Redshirt sophomore outside hitter, Blaire Fleming, went on a late run with three kills in a row to narrow the deficit, but SJSU would go on to lose the match, 25-22.
Fleming was the kills leader for SJSU with 18 on .467% hitting. She came up big for the Spartans, but it was not enough against a resilient Weber State team.
SJSU starts its season with a record of 2-1 following the Weber State Invitational. Despite the loss, the match showed how the Spartans can compete down to the wire.
The Spartans play Saint Mary’s on Friday, September 2 at 5 p.m. at Yoshihiro Uchida Hall.
