The San José State women’s soccer team (0-2, 0-0 MW) was shut down on Sunday afternoon by Saint Mary’s College (3-1, 0-0 WCC), 3-0.

SMC freshman forward Tessa Salvestrin scored the first goal for the Gaels within the match’s first minute. Senior midfielder Emily Jensen would add to Saint Mary’s lead with another goal in the second minute.

SJSU sophomore goalkeeper Shayla Sugai had her hands full in the match and provided the Spartans with seven saves.

Jensen would put the game out of reach in the 77th minute with her second goal of the day, as SMC would lead 3-0 for the rest of the match.

“Getting those two goals in the first three minutes really deflated the group,” said SJSU head coach Tina Estrada via Twitter.

SJSU was outshot by SMC, 16-14, and were awarded five corner kicks. This is a significant improvement from their home opener against Santa Clara, where the Spartans only attempted four shots and had only one corner kick.

The Spartans finished the match with eight shots on goal, SJSU Sophomore Carly Burns came off the bench and lead the team with two shots on goal.

“I am happy for two things today,” said Estrada. “I am happy to see people add from the bench in crucial spots and for the fight the team had the rest of the game.”

The Spartans will look to get their first win of the season as they head on the road to play UC Irvine on September 2. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 pm.
