San Jose State falls 2-1 as Sacramento State wins chippy affair

On a blistering hot day in Sacramento, San Jose (1-1),(0-0-0 MW) could not fight off the heat as they fell 2-1 to Sacramento State (1-1),(0-0-0 BS).

Early on in the match, San Jose State held most of the possession while registering seven shots in the first half. Despite all the pressure and corner kicks, Sacramento State struck first with a goal scored by sophomore middle fielder Ali Sasankhah.

Even while being down, San Jose still maintained the pressure and had another three corner kicks in the second half. One shot by San Jose even rang off both posts but, somehow bounced out much to the relief of Sacramento State.

To add to the pain, not too long after the double post shot Sacramento State struck again, this time sophomore forward Dominic Vegaalban with the goal. What made this goal even more painful though was that senior goalkeeper David Sweeney mishandled the ball leading to the goal.

San Jose State soccer’s head coach, Simon Tobin commented on some mistakes made by San Jose State, “Full credit to Sacramento they punished us for a couple of individual mistakes at the back.”

Late in the game, though the Spartans would attempt to mount a comeback as sophomore middle fielder Diego Delgadillo would score late. Despite all the late pressure, it was never quite enough as San Jose State would still fall 2-1.

San Jose State Soccer’s next match will be against San Francisco on Sept. 1., where they will try to get back on track.
