San Jose State women’s basketball has found its new leader after an extensive search that lasted just under one month.
Athletic director Jeff Konya announced on Wednesday that April Phillips will be taking the reins as the new head coach of the program.
“I am thankful to Jeff Konya, TurnkeyZRG, and SJSU Administration for their confidence in me leading this program,” said Phillips. “I am excited about developing young women and competing in the Mountain West.”
Phillips joins the Spartans after spending the last season in the Lone Star State as an assistant coach for the University of Texas aiding the Longhorns to an elite eight appearance and a Big 12 tournament title.
In addition to her single season at Texas, Phillips has held numerous coaching positions including assistant coaching gigs with Georgia Tech and New Haven.
Not only does Philips possess the experience to take on a head coaching job but she has shown a superb ability to scout talent picking the best players in the nation like ripe fruit on a tree.
Phillips is no stranger to putting together impressive recruiting classes helping the Longhorns sign the No. 7 ranked recruiting class as well as securing the No. 6 ranked recruiting class for the University of California Bears the year before.
Perhaps Phillip’s extensive recruiting knowledge will help in solidifying the team for next season with key players like Cydni Lewis and A’tyanna Gaulden departing from the program.
With plenty of time left before the start of the regular season, Philips will have plenty of time to assess the situation to determine what the next move for the team will be.
Welcome, coach Phillips, but only 1 year in Austin?
