San Jose State beach volleyball cracked its seven-game losing steak Friday on South Campus after going 2-0 against the University of San Francisco and Saint Mary’s.
The Spartans now sit at 4-9 on the season and all four wins have come on home sand.
The early matchup against the Dons was breezy 5-0 victory for the Spartans. The struggling Dons fell to 1-6 on their season. It was the Spartans’ second 5-0 sweep of the season. The first one came against Ottawa Arizona on Feb. 25.
The second match of the day wasn’t as breezy. Pairs Mia Schafer and Chloe Culver and Letizia Cammillucci and Allison Pereira won their matches first, giving SJSU a comfortable 2-0 lead.
The Spartans were then downed by the Gaels in the following two matches, leaving it up to Haylee Nelson and Jaida Ward against Gaels’ pair Jasmin Suarez and Jennifer Laird.
Nelson and Ward pulled through and won in two sets, 21-10, 23-21, rescuing SJSU to a 3-2 victory.
The Spartans turn their attention to a strong Oregon team Saturday morning, who also swept USF 5-0 on Friday. Then to a stingy Sacramento State squad Saturday afternoon, who hung around with the Ducks before losing to them, 3-2 Friday as well.
SJSU finishes off the weekend at Spartan Beach on Sunday morning against Arizona.
