Spartans outduel the Rebels on Sunday in a tightly contested match

It was a sunny day as San Jose State men’s soccer (4-5-1, 2-1-0 WAC) defeated UNLV (4-6-0, 0-3-0 WAC) 2-0 in a conference match on Sunday.

The Rebels outshot the Spartans with five shots-on-goal in the first half but all the Spartans needed was one.

The Spartans got on the board in the 18th minute on a far goal from senior midfielder Willy Miranda.

SJSU would not look back.

Junior goalkeeper David Sweeney had himself a day capturing 11 saves to hold the Rebels to a shutout.

The second half was more active for the Spartans offensively, they added 4 shots-on-goal and six more shots overall.

UNLV was also more active offensively but mostly out of desperation in the last few minutes of the match.

The Spartans did well to control the pace of the game.

SJSU was awarded a late yellow card in the 87th minute of the match on Senior defender Jamal Adam for unsportsmanlike conduct. Aside from that, SJSU had a cleaner game with five fouls as opposed to UNLV’s 10. This was a factor in today’s match results.

Adam added a goal in the 89th minute to end the match and secure the victory for the Spartans.

Senior forward Rudi Castro had four shots with two of them on goal for the Spartans but was not able to capitalize on those attempts.

The Rebels had two players with three shots-on-goal and another two with two shots-on-goal in Sunday’s match.

SJSU travels to Orem, Utah on Oct. 7 to battle Utah Valley on ESPN+.
