Spartans lose physical matchup in rainy conditions

San Jose State women’s soccer (7-10-1, 4-5-1 MW) lost 2-1 to their conference foe the Nevada Wolfpack (4-11-2, 3-5-2 MW) in rainy Reno, Nevada Saturday afternoon.

The Spartans came into this matchup expecting to perform well against the worst team in the conference. Throughout the first half it was a physical defensive matchup with several penalties being called on each team. The rainy conditions in Reno most likely played a factor in the sloppy play.

Early in the first half both teams combined for eight corner kicks but were unable to come up with any points.

With a scoreless first half, not a lot of shots were taken due to the swarming defense of both teams. After a scoreless first half, the second half was full of offense.

SJSU started the second half with a few more corner kicks but they were still shutout. The officials let both teams play on more with not many fouls being called early on even though both teams were extremely physical.

Junior midfielder Brooklyn Blake drills the first goal of the afternoon on a free kick in the 66th minute. Five minutes later, Nevada pushes the lead 2-0, with a score from freshman forward Emily Rich as she drills a goal to the back right corner. Rich was by far the fastest player on the field today.

Junior Julian Laurent then comes down the field and scores a goal to cut the lead down to one. Senior goalkeeper Kendal Stovall was handed a yellow card after arguing a missed foul call on the play.

Very competitive down to the very end, Nevada was able to close the game out as this win ends their three-matchup losing streak.

The Spartans play their next game on the road vs conference rival Fresno State Thursday Oct 28. This will be the last match of the regular season and will also be broadcast on the Mountain West network.
