Football preview: SJSU vs. Western Michigan

San Jose State football (2-1, 1-0 MW) will take on Western Michigan (2-1) in a fall matchup on Saturday.

The Spartans are coming off their first conference win against the University of Hawaii on Sept. 18 where they won 17-14. 

Graduate student quarterback Nick Starkel has been solid so far passing for 937 yards, six touchdowns, four interceptions and a 51% completion percentage. 

Senior running back Tyler Nevens heads into this matchup with one touchdown with 155 rush yards on 27 percent averaging 5.5 yards per carry. 

Freshman receiver Charles Ross and junior receiver Isaiah Hamilton have been the top two wideouts for the Spartans who have a combined 286 receiving yards.

Graduate student tight end Derrick Deese, Jr. has 135 receiving yards and a touchdown to his name. 

Senior linebacker Kyle Harmon leads the squad with 24 total tackles through three games. 

Junior linebacker Jordan Cobbs leads in the sack category with two for the Spartans. 

As for the Broncos, redshirt sophomore quarterback Kaleb Eleby has thrown for five touchdowns and zero interceptions for 702 yards to go along with a 62 completion percentage. 

The running back committee for WMU represents sophomore Tyler Sean and junior La’Darius Jefferson who have a combined 453 yards. 

Sophomore wide receiver Corey Crooms has been great with 279 yards and two touchdowns. 

Redshirt junior linebacker Corvin Moment has a combined 17 tackles along with two sacks.

With three and a half sacks, senior defensive lineman Ali Fayad will be a force SJSU’s offensive line will have to keep in check. 

The Broncos are coming off a shootout win against Pittsburgh that they won 44-41. 

This will be San Jose State’s third straight game on the road. 

Kickoff is set at 11 a.m. PT.
