Only eight games into the season and it is now time to question whether this will be yet another disappointing season for SJSU women’s soccer.
It’s eerily reminiscent of early 2010’s Spartans’ soccer squads.
From 2011-2014, SJSU had an abysmal stretch where it went 23-45-6 through 74 matches.
Once the Spartans hit the middle of the last decade, through 2016-2019 SJSU hit its stride, showing dominance in a difficult Mountain West Conference finishing top four in winning percentage and scoring.
Soon after the Spartans would fall on hard times, not having had a winning record since 2018 where they went 9-7-6. In a year where they secured their second MW title in three years (2015,2018).
In 2019, the blue and gold finished with a losing record of 7-9-4, but again they finished conference play with a record over .500, going 5-4-2.
This season, before MW play gets started, the Spartans are currently 3-5.
They’ve scored eight points while allowing 18.
But what is really the deal?
To start the season, there are currently 16 freshmen and sophomores listed on the roster.
Along with a freshman goalkeeping tandem of Autum Monty and Shayla Sugai.
Maybe it is nothing other than growing pains.
Head coach Lauren Hanson has been at the helm for seven years.
She has led the Spartans to two MWC Tournament titles and a regular-season title in 2017.
Hanson has dealt with these kinds of aches and pains of a young team and has taken those same teams to the promised land.
Nonetheless, SJSU will take on its first conference opponent on Friday night at 6:00 p.m. against Air Force University at USAF Academy, CO.
