San Jose State looks to get over .500 in matchup against UCSD

San Jose State men’s soccer (2-2-1) will face up against the University of California San Diego (1-4) on Thursday, Sept. 16 at the Spartan Soccer Complex. 

The Spartans did not fare well in their last matchup against Saint Mary’s (4-2) where they lost by a score of 4-2.

However; SJSU lasted in a double-overtime game against No. 20 ranked Stanford (2-1-1) that resulted in a tie. 

Senior midfielder Willy Miranda leads the pack in scoring with three goals and one assist for seven points. Senior defender Omar Lemus is right behind him on the team with two goals and two assists for six points.  

Junior goalkeeper David Sweeney heads into this matchup with a goals against average of 2.33, 10 saves and a save percentage of .588% in seven games played.

For the team as a whole, in five games the Spartans have averaged 2.20 goals per game along with 12.2 shots per game. They are allowing a flat two goals per game with a 13.2 shots-against average. 

As for the Tritons, senior forward Nick Cirrito leads his squad with two goals and four points. Junior Allen Allesandro is second on the team with one goal and one assist for three points. 

Redshirt senior goalkeeper Dominic Peters has a staggering goals against average of 1.02, 25 saves and a save percentage of .833% in five games played.

Their last matchup resulted in a double-overtime loss to Santa Clara University (4-1) by a score of 1-0.

The Spartans will have the advantage over a weak San Diego defense but the wall of Peters will pose a challenge.

The game will begin at 6 p.m at the Spartan Soccer Complex.
