Here are the scores, news and notes from around the Mountain West Conference in week two.
Vanderbilt (1-1, 0-0 SEC) 24 Colorado St. (0-2, 0-0 MW) 21
Sophomore quarterback Ken Seals led the Commodores to a road win against the Rams on Saturday afternoon. Completing 27 of his 42 passes for 238 yards, two touchdowns with a rushing touchdown. The dynamic duo of senior quarterback Todd Centeio and senior tight end Trey McBride was not enough for the Rams. Centeio went 20 for 38 passing with two touchdowns and one interception. McBride had eight catches for 114 yards and one touchdown. Vanderbilt will play host to Stanford on Saturday. While Colorado St. will look for its first win of the season on the road on Saturday against Toledo.
San Diego State (2-0, 0-0 MW) 38 Arizona (0-2, 0-0 PAC-12) 14.
The Aztecs were able to stay unbeaten thanks to senior running back Greg Bell. He had 17 carries for 125 rushing yards and one touchdown. Senior quarterback Jordan Brookshire also had a nice day against the Wildcats defense. Brookshire completed 10 of his 15 pass attempts for 183 yards and two touchdowns. Arizona was able to get a pair of passing touchdowns from two different quarterbacks. Freshmans Gunner Cruz and Will Plummer. The Aztecs will go home to play Utah on Saturday. Arizona will try to look for its first win of the season at home against Northern Arizona.
Fresno St. (2-1, 0-0 MW) 63 Cal Poly (1-1, 0-0 Big Sky) 10
The Mustangs defense had no answer for Bulldog’s senior quarterback Jake Haener. He completed 17 of his 22 pass attempts for 380 yards, four touchdowns and two rushing touchdowns. Haener has once again proved why he belongs in the talks for Mountain West Offensive Player Of the Year. His favorite target was sophomore wide receiver Josh Kelly, who had three catches for 127 yards and two touchdowns. One player who stood out for Cal Poly was senior running back Lepi Lataimua, who had six kick returns for 122 yards averaging 20 yards a return. Fresno St. will look to get a win on the road against UCLA on Saturday. While Cal Poly will play host to South Dakota.
No. 19 Arizona St. (2-0, 0-0 PAC-12) 37 UNLV (0-2, 0-0 MW) 10
The Sun Devils rushing game was the key to success on Saturday. Senior running back Rachaad White had 22 carries for 90 yards and two touchdowns. Junior quarterback Jayden Daniels had 13 carries for 122 yards, to go along with his 20 completed passes for 175 yards, two touchdowns and one interception. The lone touchdown for the Rebels came from freshman quarterback Doug Brumfield, who completed six of his 14 passes for 60 yards. He also had 8 carries for 43 yards and one touchdown. Brumfield left the game in the third quarter after he took a hit. UNLV will head home to play Iowa State. While Arizona St. will hit the road to face BYU.
Nevada (2-0, 0-0 MW) 49 Idaho State (0-2, 0-0 Big Sky) 10
Senior linebacker Oshea Trujillo was the lone Bangles to find the endzone on Saturday. Lined up as a running back, Trujillo was able to pound the ball into the endzone for a one yard score. Nevada junior quarterback Carson Strong lit up the stat sheets. Completing 34 of his 43 pass attempts for 381 yards and four touchdowns. Graduate defensive tackle Tristan Nichols racked up four tackles and three sacks in the win. Idaho State will play host to Sacramento St. on Sep. 25. The Wolf Pack will go on the road to face Kansas State on Saturday.
Oregon State (1-1, 0-0 PAC-12) 45 Hawaii (1-2, 0-0 MW) 27
The Beavers had a strong showing from junior running back B.J. Baylor, who had 18 carries for 171 yards and three touchdowns. Freshman wide receiver Anthony Gould also had a big game, having seven receptions for 119 yards and one touchdown. Rainbow Warriors sophomore quarterback Chevan Cordeiro completed 24 of his 49 pass attempts for 366 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions. Senior running back Calvin Turner Jr. had 10 carries for 22 yards and two touchdowns in the loss. Oregon St. will play host to Idaho on Saturday. Hawaii will look to right the ship at home against San Jose State.
