Volleyball falls to Texas Tech, suffer second consecutive sweep

SJSU women’s volleyball (4-4) experienced another 3-0 sweep at the Buffalo Invitational in Colorado Saturday.

Texas Tech University ended the Spartan’s three-day run in Colorado with three straight losses.

In Saturday’s 25-17, 25-19, 25-19 loss to the Red Raiders, the Spartans looked exhausted and were down in points every set.

In front of 15 Coloradian fans and a live-stream audience, the Spartans looked slower on the defensive end and the usual strength in their spikes were not there Saturday.

SJSU was down 19-14 in the second set and Texas Tech eventually got up to 22-14.

While SJSU clawed its way up to 19 points, Texas Tech eventually secured it 25-19.

The third set was the dagger as Texas Tech got good blocks on SJSU and served well.

As always, SJSU still had hustle on the defensive end with sophomore setter Mia Schafer accruing 17 digs and senior libero Sarah Smevog with 14.

While senior outside hitter Haylee Nelson did have a team-high 14 kills, Texas Tech’s astonishing defense kept the rallies going on long enough that Texas Tech’s front court got a chance to get a good, accurate spike in on the Spartans.

Statistically speaking, the Red Rangers managed only 37 kills compared to 41 kills by the Spartans.

But Texas Tech outscored SJSU 55 points to 47 points. Texas Tech also served well with the team having six aces compared to SJSU’s three aces.

It’s on the defensive end where you really see how dominant Texas Tech really was.

Texas Tech had 12 blocks compared to SJSU’s three blocks.

SJSU leaves Colorado bruised and battered from three straight losses.

They look to redeem themselves back home at Spartan Gym as they face University of San Francisco Thursday Sept. 16 at 6 p.m.
