Johnson, Cash headline Spartans’ MW Championships performance

San Jose State sprinters were the stars of the show over the weekend as men’s and women’s track and field competed in the Mountain West Championships.

The men’s team finished in sixth place with 70 points, while the women’s team finished in 10th place with 34 points.

On Saturday senior sprinter Roman Johnson won the men’s 100 meter dash event with a time of 10.40 seconds, the Spartans’ first win in the event since 1982.

Johnson was also part of the 4×100 relay team that won the took gold the same day, with the team of him, freshman Jalen Adams, junior Nicholas Harper and senior Aidan Jardon finishing with a time of 40.59 for the team’s first relay win since 1982.

Jardon took second place in the men’s 200 meter dash with a time of 21.27 seconds, while Harper took eighth with a time of 21.73 seconds.

The men’s 4×400 team of Jardon, Harper, freshman Harry Overstreet and freshman Christian Rodriguez took third place with a time of 3:16.15.

On Friday freshman Tyler Cash won the high jump event with a mark of 2.09 meters, followed right behind by fellow freshman Kyle Jankans with a mark of 2.05 meters.

Sophomore Jacob Lopez finished seventh in the men’s shot put event with a distance of 15.48 meters, followed by freshman Ty Seligman in 11th with a distance 13.76 meters and freshman Matheu Johnson in 12th with a distance of 13.26 meters.

Sophomore Bryan Quintero took fifth place in the men’s hammer throw with a distance of 55.91 meters.

Sophomore Mahkaia Lee finished fourth in the women’s long jump with a distance of 5.83 meters, followed by senior Kylia Smith with a 5.75 meter performance.

The team of freshman Sydney Bentley, junior Sophie Liao, freshman Kaiya Johnson and senior Daryia Greene took second place in the women’s 4×400 with a time of 3:42.96.

Greene, Liao, Smith and senior Lonsha Bradford won third place in the 4×100 relay at 44.94 seconds, while Greene also took third place in the 400 meter dash with a time of 53.54 seconds.
