SJSU men’s golf returns to form

By Derrick Ow — Reporter

The San Jose State men’s golf team might have got rid of their winter blues.

SJSU found their form in Eugene, Ore., as it finished in sixth place at the Oregon Duck Invitational. Four Spartans found themselves in the top 20 despite the chilly conditions at Eugene Country Club.

The Spartans finished 34-over-par 886 which was 26 strokes back of Oregon State who stormed their way to their second straight title on their rival’s turf. The Beavers finished at eight over par which was four clear of Oregon.

Senior Nate Jetter got his best collegiate finish as he finished in a tie for 14th at six over par. The Pleasanton native did have two bogeys on the scorecard but managed to keep the ball in play. He shot a 1-over 73.

Junior Bryce Wortman did not have a pleasant start to his round with four bogeys on the front nine. He did turn his day around with two birdies on the back nine. He also finished in a tie for 14th place.

Sophomore Vijay Srinvasan shot a final round 4-over 75. He was playing as an individual this week and got his best collegiate finish in a tie for 18th at eight over par.

Senior Sean Yu could not get his putter to cooperate. He did make two birdies but added seven boegies for his round. He shot 4-over-par 73 to finish in a tie for 18th at eight over par.

Freshman Caleb Shetler had a forgettable week in Oregon. He shot his second straight round of 77 to finish at 19 over par which was a tie for 64th.

Boise State redshirt sophomore Hugo Townsend navigated through rain and win to earn his first collegiate title. Townsend shot a 1-under 70 which included a clutch birdie on the par-4 17th hole. He finished at six under par which was two clear of Washington senior Noah Woolsey.

Second round co-leader Spencer Tibbits just could not make those par saves. The Oregon State senior shot 2-over 73 to finish the tournament at 3 under par in a tie for third.

The Spartans will get to sleep in their own beds this week for their next tournament. SJSU will compete at The Goodwin at Stanford Golf Course this Thursday thru Sunday.

Day 1

San Jose State men’s golf might have found some mojo in the Beaver State.

The Spartans played 36 holes at Eugene Country Club and managed to position themselves inside the top 10 at the Oregon Duck Invitational.

SJSU shot a 302 in the morning but managed to shoot a 2-over 286 in the afternoon to sit in sixth place on the team leaderboard. They currently are at 20 over par, which is 16 back of Oregon who is at 4-over 572.

Junior Bryce Wortman loves playing in the Pacfic Northwest. The 2020 Oregon State Amateur champion played his best round of the season in the afternoon. He shot an even par 72 after shooting a 74 in the morning. He is currently tied for 13th at four over and was not the only Spartan at that mark.

Senior Nate Jetter also brought his best golf with him. He shot a 74 in the morning but also backed it up with an even par 72 in the afternoon. He birdied three in a row on holes 12 thru 14. He is also in a tie for 13th at four over par.

Fellow senior Sean Yu rebounded from a disastrous 4-over 76 in the morning round. He managed to shoot a 2-under 70 with three birdies on the back nine. He is also at four over par for the tournament.

The biggest surprise of the day was sophomore Vijay Srinivasan, who is playing as an individual this week. The Fremont native showed that he can be a consistent part of the lineup. He shot a 77 in the morning round but came back a different golfer in the afternoon.  He shot a 3-under 69 which included three birdies to put himself in a tie for 13th.

Freshman Carl Corpus returned to the lineup and battled all day long. He shot a 7-over 79 in the morning round which included two double bogeys. In the afternoon, he posted a 1-over 73 which puts him at nine over par for the tournament. He is in a tie for 44th place.

Freshman Caleb Shetler shot rounds of 78 and 77 to put himself in a tie for 56th place at 13 over par.

They are all chasing Boise State redshirt sophomore Hugo Townsend and Oregon State senior Spencer Tibbits. Both players are at five under par with a one shot lead over Oregon junior Tom Gueant.

SJSU starts the final round at 8:30 a.m.
