San Jose State men’s soccer (1-1) tied its third match of the season against Houston Baptist University (0-4-1) on Saturday 1-1.
Despite their past seasons and games, the Huskies matched the Spartans for an unexpected draw.
The game started with an uneventful 45 minutes full of throw-ins and back-and-forth with the ball.
No team seemed to gain the upper hand with the first half ending in a tie 0-0.
HBU made only one foul in the first half whilst SJSU made four fouls which let HBU grab six free penalty kicks.
During the second half, HBU’s sophomore forward Bryant Farkarlun ran the ball clear toward the goal but was tripped up by SJSU’s sophomore defender Josh Redfield 49 minutes into the game.
A foul was called on Redfield, giving the Huskies a penalty kick right in front of the net.
HBU’s sophomore midfielder Luis Poblacion took the shot, shooting it past Spartan sophomore goalkeeper David Sweeney and scored the first goal of the game at the 49th minute to give the Huskies a 1-0 lead.
Only a minute later, the Spartans returned the favor by grabbing a penalty kick in front of the net after a foul was called on Huskies’ sophomore goalkeeper JP Becerra.
SJSU senior forward Rudi Castro fires the ball dead center of the net, tying with the Huskies 1-1 in the 50th minute of the game.
In the 62nd minute in the game, Farkarlun got hold of the ball and attempted another run straight to the net, but was blocked by an unnamed Spartan.
Farkarlun wasn’t able to pull the brakes and plowed straight into the Pepsi side ad and out the field. The referee did not call any penalties there.
After neither team could find an opening to score, the game went into extra time for the first time this season for SJSU.
No significant action was made until the 104th minute of the game in the second session when SJSU’s senior midfielder Nicolas Brenes shot the ball straight into the net only for it to ping-pong around the posts barely missing the net.
Farkarlun attempted a last play with two minutes left by landing a shot rolling into the net past Sweeney, however, the referee called foul on HBU and the shot did not count.
The 110 minute game ended in a tie 1-1.
SJSU men’s soccer will return for a home game against the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley on 7 P.M. Saturday at the Spartan Soccer Complex (SSC).
