WVB preview: San Jose State hopes to buck Rams in opening series game

San Jose State women’s volleyball (3-5, 3-5 MW) will buck against the Colorado State University Rams (4-4, 1-3 MW) on Friday, March 12.

The Spartans currently stand at a record of 3-5 winning their last two games in a series against the University of Nevada.  

Junior middle blocker Haylee Nelson and outside hitter redshirt senior Latahevai Lousi have a combined 211 kills and have been a deadly duo for SJSU.

Junior libero Sarah Smevog has continued her dominance as the team’s defensive backstop with 112 digs to her name. Nelson is second on the team with 104 digs. 

Freshman setter Mia Schafer has made her mark on the team defensively with 72 digs on the year. 

The Rams have a .500 record at 4-4 going into the game. 

Colorado State redshirt senior outside hitter Breana Runnels leads the team with 117 kills on her resume.  Sophomore outside hitter Jacqi Van Liefde and junior middle blocker Sasha Colombo have a combined 123 kills creating more depth for a Colorado team looking to gain a winning record after this matchup.

Senior libero Alexa Roumeliotis has a whopping 154 digs and has been the team’s main defensive standpoint this season. Redshirt sophomore setter Ciera Zimmerman has 61 digs and Runnels has 58 digs. 

Colorado State is ranked fourth in the Mountain West in hitting percentage at .214. San Jose State is ranked sixth in hitting at .199 percent.

Both schools are ranked at fifth and sixth in digs with Colorado state averaging 15 a set and San Jose state averaging 14.5 a set.

The game will be played on Friday, March 12 at 3 p.m at Yosh Uchida Hall/ Spartan Gym.
