San Jose State women’s volleyball (0-2, 0-2 MW) will go into a two-game weekend battle with the Air Force Academy Falcons (1-1, 1-1 MW) starting Friday, Feb. 12.
The Spartans were swept by Boise State (2-0, 2-0 MW) last week, losing each matchup 3-1 to start the young season.
Redshirt senior outside hitter Letahevai Lousi and junior middle hitter Haylee Nelson have a combined total of 63 kills and are looking to add more to their resumes during the weekend series.
With her 47 assists over the series against the Broncos, freshman setter Mia Schafer leads the team in setting up kills for her teammates. Junior setter Mamie Garard is behind Schafer with 31 assists.
Garard leads with four serving aces despite six serving errors. Senior middle blocker Ryan Thomison has three aces with five errors and Schafer has three aces with four errors.
Junior libero Sarah Smevog leads the Spartans defensively with 40 digs while freshman middle back Allyson Alden owns a total of eight block assists.
As for the Falcons, they began their season against the Colorado State Rams (1-1, 1-1 MW). They lost their first matchup 3-1 and won the second 3-0.
Senior middle blocker Cambria Galloway leads the Falcons with 17 kills with junior outside hitter Bailey Keith right behind with 14. Senior setter Andi Ahlers has also piloted 35 assists to start the season.
Freshman Libero Gabby Wilson is on top of the roster with five serving aces. Keith is backing her with four.
Senior libero Jordan Daniels is the defensive leader for the Falcons with a total of 26 digs. Freshman middle blocker Joi Harvey also has five total blocks.
Air Force leads both squads offensively with a hitting percentage of .213 in seven sets, while SJSU stands at .194 in eight sets. For assists, SJSU averages 11.88 per set and Air Force averages 11.29 per set.
SJSU averages 1.56 block assists per set on defense and Air Force averages 1.14 per set. The Spartans stand at a high dig average of 14.75, but on the other end the Falcons have struggled at only 11.00 per game.
Friday and Saturday’s games will both take place at Air Force’s Cadet East Gym at 6 p.m. MT, streamed live on the Mountain West Digital Network.
