San Jose State volleyball (0-3) lost to Air Force (2-1) on Friday, 3-1 despite 12 kills from Haylee Nelson.
Both teams went back and forth throughout the beginning of the match, with a total of 17 ties and 11 lead changes through the first two sets.
But the Falcons’ balance between attack and defense gave them the edge in both sets, winning 25-19 and 25-21 respectively.
SJSU was able to show resiliency as it started the third set strong with an 11-2 run.
The strong start was key for the Spartans to win their only set of the match.
Sophomore Makayla Lewis made strong defensive plays, blocking much of the Falcons’ hits.
The Falcons were able to close the gap, but SJSU hung on to win the set 25-22.
Despite the win, the Spartans weren’t able to carry that momentum through set four.
Air Force adapted to SJSU’s defensive positioning on every spike attempt leaving them with an early lead during the fourth set.
The Falcons led for the majority of the final set, snuffing out every opportunity for the Spartans to make a comeback.
Freshman Gabby Wilson made the final kill for the Falcons to close out the final set by the score of 25-20.
With the loss, the SJSU women’s volleyball team is now on a three-game losing streak to start the season.
The Spartans get another chance against the Falcons on Saturday at 6 p.m.
