San Jose State basketball (5-13, 3-11 Mountain West) lost to San Diego State (15-4, 9-3 MW) on Wednesday in the second game of the teams’ two game series at Viejas Arena.

The Spartans took an 11-7 lead with 13:51 remaining in the first half after a steal and dunk by sophomore guard Omari Moore that started in the Spartans’ zone defense. That gave the Spartans their largest lead of the night.

Despite the first 12 minutes of the game looking hopeful for the Spartans, the Aztecs pulled ahead by six points at the end of the first half.

The Aztecs continued to turn up the heat throughout the second half and the Spartans couldn’t keep up.

Senior guard Jordan Schakel scored 17 points in the second half followed by freshman guard Lamont Butler with another seven points for the Aztecs.

The Aztecs went on a 10-point run with 12:38 left in the second half making it impossible for the Spartans to catch up.

Schakel scored a total of 24 points and two assists for SDSU.

The Spartans have now lost two straight games after going on a three-game win streak in late January.

Despite the loss, Spartan junior guard Trey Smith scored a career-high 22 points. He also notched a career-high eight rebounds.

Spartan senior guard Richard Washington remained out with a head injury, his fifth straight game out of the lineup.

The Spartans will return to the Event Center for the first time since Feb. 29, 2020 to take on the Nevada Wolf Pack on Saturday at 1 p.m.
