San Jose State men’s basketball (5-12, 2-11 MW) fell to the San Diego State Aztecs (14-4, 8-3 MW) on Monday night in a blowout 54-85 loss, ending the Spartans three-game win streak.
This is SJSU’s first loss since Jan. 21.
The win for the Aztecs pushes their streak to five, which were all won by 27 points or more.
The Spartans took the lead 21-20 with 9:19 left on the clock in the first half, but after regaining the lead with a three-pointer, the Aztecs never looked back.
The Aztecs went on a 65-33 run to finish off the Spartans.
SJSU held the lead for only one minute and 57 seconds, as they trailed for a whopping 36 minutes of the game.
Throughout the game, there were multiple moments in which the Spartans could not sink a shot. In the second half, SJSU’s field goal drought grew to almost 8 minutes as they went 0-6 from the field in that stretch.
SDSU was sent to the free throw line for 35 free throw opportunities and drained 27 of those shots.
The Aztecs defense pushed the pace and forced the Spartans to make 15 turnovers, which SDSU converted into 23 points, SJSU is currently ranked 11th in turnovers in the MWC.
SDSU’s defense dominated on the boards grabbing 54 rebounds against SJSU’s 30 rebounds.
SJSU only managed to shoot at 34 percent from the field and 33 percent from the three-point line.
The Spartans look to improve their efforts against the Aztecs, as the two go head-to-head again Wednesday at 8 p.m.
