Spartans overpowered by Rams’ offense

San Jose State men’s basketball (2-10, 0-8 MW) has lost its last four games as it suffered another defeat against Colorado State (10-2, 7-1 MW) in Phoenix on Saturday, 88-61.

The Rams outscored the Spartans from the field and beyond the three point line. Colorado State shot 51 percent from the field and cashed in 12 three pointers compared to SJSU’s lackluster 38 percent from the field and six three point field goals made.

The Spartans trailed nearly the entire game, possessing the lead for only a meager 46 seconds of game time. Colorado State led in every statistical category to finish the game except for free throws attempted. Yet, SJSU shot a mere 47 percent from the free throw line compared to the Rams’ 86 percent from the free throw line.

Freshman guard Sebastian Mendoza, senior forward Ralph Agee and senior guard Richard Washington combined for 42 of SJSU’s 61 total points. The offensive efficiency needed from the other Spartan players was nonexistent Saturday afternoon, shooting a combined 8-of-28 from the floor.

On the other hand, the Rams scored in every way possible from any man available. Four of Colorado State’s five starters finished exceeded double digits in points. The Rams had all the momentum the entire match.

The Spartans will have nearly five days of rest and recovery until they tip off against New Mexico on Jan. 21 in St. George, Utah.
